We have seen the stage show across the country, Prime Minister Rudd and Health Minister Nicola Roxon revealing grand plans for health reform, some refer to it as the final bout of CPR for a system near rapid demise.
“Regardless of your analogy most would agree that unless all players are together and share the same aim this will simply be another talk fest and Australian health consumer will suffer.” said Justine Caines a health consumer advocate for 10 years and Secretary of Homebirth Australia.
“Maternity reform was the first cab off the rank and it will be a vital part of the reform process because it is the largest volume area of health and accounts for the greatest number of bed stays said Ms Caines”
“Homebirth Australia has mounted a major campaign to prevent homebirth becoming unlawful, something Minister Roxon has finally responded to and has said she will look into providing professional indemnity support.” said Ms Caines
“What is still concerning is that there are a swag of bureaucrats in Canberra who are very removed from reality. Homebirth Australia believes they are persisting with an agenda to stifle reform which could make women unsafe. If Minister Roxon genuinely wants to keep homebirth as an option she must reign in her bureaucrats, many who are legacies of the Howard era.” said Ms Caines.
Mothers and midwives have gathered today outside Minister Roxon’s Melbourne electorate office to personalise this campaign. Come and hear real stories from women encountering the maternity system (Hospital and home). If we can’t get maternity care right when occupies the greatest number of hospital beds, there is no way we will achieve overall reform.” said Ms Caines.
Women will gather with their stories, all will leave Minister Roxon with a “Calling card” or perhaps we can call it a report card, the reality of health care, good and bad let’s hear from the Mums of Australia rather than the stage-managed responses we so often see.
Women will assemble from 10.30am
